Different V2X radio technology can be more suitable for fulfilling the needs of specific V2X applications supporting ADFs. As an example, ad-hoc direct short range communication technologies like ITS G5 or C-V2X PC5 ensuring very low latencies and reliability at short distances and not relying on any communication infrastructure support can effectively support cooperative maneuvering use cases between nearby vehicles and therefore meet the associated safety constraints.
On the contrary traditional C-V2X Uu communications from cellular infrastructure can be sufficient to meet the more relaxed requirements of road signage applications. In this context, ADF developers and system architects need to have a clear understanding of the requirements of the target ADFs and get a comprehensive knowledge on the capabilities of distinct radio access technologies to decide which one is more suitable to be integrated in the ADS.
Good technical descriptions and guidelines for suitability are provided by the UTAC SECUR project (UTAC, 2022) in relation to V2X applications supporting warning and crash avoidance use cases. Even if not totally reflecting the needs of connected ADFs, the same guidelines can be reused in this context as a very good basis.
Main Question
Is the option of using one or multiple V2X technologies systematically evaluated based on reccommendations regarding which V2X technology suits best the target ADFs?
Sub-Questions
- Does the radio technology used for V2X communication provide the necessary range, coverage, latency capabilities, varying bandwidth, and data rates to meet the real-time communication requirements of the target ADF’s V2X applications??
- Are the radio technologies able to handle interference, maintain connectivity and operate in diverse environments in order to provide high reliable and available communication channels required by safety critical V2X application possibly adopted by the ADF?
- Is the radio technology able to support a large number of connected vehicles and infrastructure nodes simultaneously in congested areas?
- Do the configurations of V2X device support the specific radio signal characteristics such as power levels, modulation and coding schemes and bandwidths according to the V2X application requirements?
