The Code of Practice for the Development of Connected Automated Driving Functions offers comprehensive guidelines for the design, development, verification, and validation of safe automated driving technologies. It focuses on SAE Level 3 and 4 functions in passenger cars for motorways and parking, but can be expanded to other Operational Design Domains (ODDs) and automation levels.

The CoP-CADF is built around questions and sub-questions to guide you through the development process.

Please note:

WHAT is the CoP about?
The Code of Practice (CoP) provides guidance for the design, development, verification, and validation of automated driving technologies.

The Hi-Drive CoP-CADF builds on the L3Pilot CoP-ADF. While L3Pilot focused on Automated Driving Functions (ADF), Hi-Drive has broadened the scope to Connected Automated Driving Functions (CADF). The CoP has therefore been expanded by restructuring topics, adding new ones, and updating content with the latest information.

HOW do I use and navigate the CoP?
The CoP is organized into 11 topics, each containing a set of questions.

  • The aim of these questions is not to deliver a simple “yes” or “no” but to encourage reflection. A “yes” and a “no” can both be correct answers—if they are well justified. This question-based format was chosen because automated driving is evolving rapidly. What seems reasonable today may change tomorrow.
To remain neutral, the CoP does not prescribe solutions but instead helps developers make informed decisions.

  • Main questions are often supported by sub-questions. These are optional and serve to clarify and support the main point.

  • Each question is linked to at least one topic, and often to several. Questions are classified across three dimensions: Process, Technology, and Ethics. Typically, a question connects to at least one Process and one Technology topic, while Ethics comes into play depending on the scope.

You can approach the CoP in two ways:

  • Use the search field if you are looking for a specific aspect.
  • Browse by topic if you want to explore a broader area.
