Augmented HMIs can help to improve both operator performance and situation awareness.
For example, in adverse weather conditions, using an adaptive presentation of bounding boxes around relevant road users reduced collisions and improved situation awareness in a remote assistance task.
Research on this field is currently evolving, with the first concepts for improving SA in remote driving starting to be published. (Schrank et al., 2025).
